During the Directors review of 2006/2007, delivery of Projects on time was an area that was identified for progressive development.
Whilst our record is compatible with the rest of the industry, it is our aim to perform above industry standards in all fields.
We believed the best way forward to achieve our aims was to seek the assistance of a specialist consultancy in the form of Construct Wales.
Construct Wales consultant Richard Donnelly began by arranging a seminar and workshop for all our construction staff at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, and gathered their opinions on issues affecting the company’s efficiency at site level.
The next step was to address the issues raised by staff and identify ways to improve. Richard worked closely with one of our project manager’s Martin Workman, focusing on improvements in planning on one of our sites at Bridgend and another at Gilfach Goch, with input from sub-contractors.
A further workshop was held in Merthyr Tydfil, where we were constructing a new 51 bed Travelodge. Using lean construction principles and with the involvement of sub-contractors, the workshop determined the most efficient way of building the hotel.
It was originally planned to build in batches of 20 rooms at a time, but Jehu found that building 10 rooms at a time would be much more efficient.
These techniques have already reaped noticeable benefits and we are looking at rolling out these tools and techniques to the operations of the South & West Wales regions.
