NEW SPECIAL CARE FACILITY COMMENCES IN PEMBROKE DOCK

The beginning of a new era in the care of the mentally ill is underway, as work begins on a new psychiatric hospital, which will be the first of its kind in Pembrokeshire.

Building work began on Wednesday, January 9th at the site in Pembroke Dock, adjacent to the refurbished South Pembrokeshire Hospital which will provide specialist care and structured rehabilitation for those with mental problems, learning disabilities, and challenging behaviour.

The £4million project is being developed by Surehaven Ltd, based in Newport, for NHS patients.

The 16-bed unit in Pembroke Dock will be the first of many treatment centres the company will develop across the UK.

The Pembrokeshire unit will treat people between the ages of 18 and 65 and there will also be an eight-bed specialist unit for people with learning disabilities. The development will have staff working on a rota basis to provide 24-hour support and care.

Surehaven Managing Director, Keith Woodall said: “I believe this development is urgently needed in West Wales. At present there are few specialist services in the area for people suffering from mental health problems.”

“That means patients have to go outside the area for treatment – often outside Wales itself.”

“This naturally adds to their concerns and those of their families. With this centre we can provide that care close to home. It will create jobs in the area too.”

Director of Operations and Psychological services, Angela Phillips, said: “A range of psychological assessments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most emotional and behavioural difficulties.”
